Content:

Wajima lacquerware began long ago when monks from Kishu (Wakayama area) brought the craft to Wajima. Thanks to its superior beauty and durability, Wajima lacquer became well known throughout Japan.
A special decorative technique called Chinkin (沈金 — gold-inlaid carving) is often used in Wajima lacquerware. In Showa 27 (1952), this craft was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Asset.
Master craftsman Maebata Mineo is one of the great living cultural treasures (人間文化財 — "Living National Treasure") in this field.
Today, top Wajima lacquerware artisans who are members of the Japan Craft Association (クラフトマン協会) continue to create these beautiful works, and the public is asked to support and appreciate their continued tradition.
