Vintage Japanese Sakura Wood Haribako Sewing Box Multi-Drawer
Vintage Japanese Sakura Wood Haribako Sewing Box Multi-Drawer
A beautiful and highly practical example of mid-century Japanese craftsmanship, this authentic vintage 1950s Japanese Haribako (針箱) is a traditional sewing and household storage box with a distinctive multi-drawer design.
The term Haribako (針箱) literally means “needle box” and refers to traditional Japanese boxes used for organizing sewing needles, thread, fabrics, scissors, and other small sewing implements. Vintage Japanese Haribako commonly feature multiple drawers together with an upper compartment for keeping sewing materials organized.
This particular piece has a wonderfully aged appearance, with rich dark brown wood, pronounced natural grain, and an attractive rustic patina developed over decades.
The upper section opens to reveal a spacious compartment with internal dividers, while the front contains multiple drawers in different sizes, providing practical storage for sewing supplies, jewelry, stationery, craft materials, small tools, or personal keepsakes.
The combination of compact proportions, clever organization, natural wood, and simple metal drawer pulls reflects the practical beauty of Japanese domestic design during the Shōwa period.
According to the provenance provided with this piece, it is made from Sakura (Japanese cherry) wood and was sourced from a Japanese Government Antique Auction in Japan.
Today, it can be enjoyed as both a functional organizer and a beautiful piece of Japanese vintage furniture.
Traditional Japanese Haribako
Haribako were designed around the Japanese practice of keeping sewing materials organized and readily accessible. Similar mid-century examples feature several differently sized drawers and a top storage compartment, making them remarkably efficient despite their relatively compact size.
The design also has a miniature Tansu-like appearance, with the drawers arranged vertically like a small chest of drawers.
While originally intended for sewing, vintage Haribako are now popular for many other purposes, including:
Sewing and embroidery supplies
Sashiko materials
Jewelry and watches
Stationery
Art and craft supplies
Small tools
Keepsakes and collectibles
Desk organization
Decorative storage

Important Condition Notice
The bottom full-width drawer does not close properly.
It can still be opened and used for storage, but it does not sit/close completely as it should. Please see the photographs carefully before purchasing.
There are also minor signs of age and use throughout the wooden surfaces, including scratches, small marks, and variations in the finish.
I have intentionally left the piece with its aged character rather than carrying out a heavy restoration that would remove the original vintage appearance.
Please study all photographs carefully. The photographs show the actual item you will receive and are an important part of the condition description.
