This is an authentic vintage Japanese Kabazaiku (樺細工) tansu chest, handcrafted in Japan during the 1980s using genuine sakura cherry bark veneer, one of Japan’s most refined and historically important decorative woodworking traditions.

Sourced directly from a Japanese government antique auction, this elegant two-drawer chest represents over 200 years of traditional craftsmanship originating from Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture, the birthplace of Kabazaiku.

Kabazaiku artisans carefully harvest wild mountain cherry bark, naturally age and dry it for years, then meticulously hand-laminate it onto wooden cores. This demanding process creates a smooth, glossy surface with dramatic natural grain patterns, rich color variation, and a warm organic texture—making every piece completely unique.

Traditionally used as a Haribako (針箱 / sewing chest) for storing needles, threads, fabrics, and sewing tools, this versatile tansu is equally perfect for:

  • Jewelry and precious keepsakes
  • Tea ceremony accessories
  • Stationery and writing tools
  • Watches, coins, or collectibles
  • Personal treasures and small valuables

Its compact design, smooth-sliding drawers, elegant metal pulls, and naturally aged cherry bark finish make this both a practical storage solution and a beautiful decorative object.

This is not a reproduction—this is an authentic vintage example of traditional Japanese artisan work.

🌸 About Kabazaiku

Kabazaiku (樺細工) is a traditional Japanese craft dating back over 200 years, developed in Kakunodate, Akita Prefecture. Unlike ordinary veneer work, genuine cherry bark is carefully harvested, cured, polished, and hand-applied to create pieces of exceptional durability and beauty.

Because every bark layer contains unique natural patterns, no two Kabazaiku pieces are ever identical.
