This charcoal brazier, known as a hibachi, was traditionally used in Japanese households to boil water or gently warm a room. It is designed to hold a copper or ceramic inner bowl for ash and charcoal.

The Makie (蒔絵) technique used in its decoration is a classical Japanese lacquer art, where powdered metals like gold or silver are delicately sprinkled onto wet lacquer to form shimmering floral designs.
