The original handwritten box inscription records the date of November 1970, adding historical value and authenticity to this remarkable item. Acquired from a Japanese government auction, this doll has remained beautifully preserved for more than fifty years.

About Kappa & Japanese Folk Art
The Kappa is one of the most recognizable creatures in Japanese folklore. Stories about Kappa have been told throughout Japan for centuries, describing playful river spirits known for their mischievous nature and unique appearance.

During the Showa era, artisans occasionally created Kokeshi-inspired figures depicting legendary creatures, local traditions, and regional folklore. Pieces like this are far less common than standard Kokeshi dolls and are increasingly difficult to find today.

This doll beautifully combines traditional woodworking techniques with Japanese storytelling culture, making it both decorative and historically interesting.
