Extremely Rare 1950s Japanese Wooden Niō Guardian Statue – Giant-Size Carving

An impressive giant-size Japanese wooden Niō guardian statue dating to the Shōwa era of the 1950s, sourced from a Japanese antique auction. This powerful hand-carved figure features dramatic facial expression, muscular anatomy, flowing sculptural details, and a rugged base that gives the piece a commanding presence.

The guardian is depicted standing firmly on a rocky base, with one arm raised toward the face and the other hand clenched. Its intense eyes, pronounced brows, broad chest, defined muscles, and flowing forms behind the head create a dynamic composition characteristic of powerful guardian imagery in Japanese Buddhist art.

The warm brown wood finish highlights the carved details and variations in the surface, giving this large sculpture a distinctive vintage appearance.

A Single Niō Guardian – Not a Pair

Niō, also known as Kongōrikishi, are powerful guardian figures associated with Japanese Buddhist temples. Traditionally, they stand at temple entrances to protect sacred spaces and Buddhist teachings. A traditional pair commonly consists of Agyō, with an open mouth, and Ungyō, with a closed mouth.

This particular sculpture is offered as one individual guardian statue. Although Niō figures are traditionally displayed in pairs, this is the single piece available from the Japanese antique auction. It can be displayed independently as a striking Japanese antique or incorporated into a collection of Buddhist art and traditional wood sculpture.

Rare Japanese Antique with Strong Display Presence

With its substantial size, expressive carving, and sculptural movement, this figure makes an eye-catching focal point for a collection, study, meditation space, or interior inspired by Japanese art and architecture.
