This authentic 1950s Japanese Namazu & Kappa figurine is a rare and expressive mid-century folk art pottery sculpture, sourced directly from a Japan Government Auction. A BIG SIZE display piece, it features a whimsical Kappa riding on the back of a Namazu—the legendary catfish spirit from Japanese mythology.

The Namazu (鯰) is a symbolic creature believed to cause earthquakes, while the Kappa (河童) is a playful yet mischievous water yokai. Together they create a powerful and humorous composition, blending folklore, humor, and protective symbolism.

Crafted from traditional Japanese pottery, the piece shows detailed hand-sculpting: the textured Namazu body, expressive face, and the Kappa’s characterful posture. The natural earthy tones and aged patina highlight its vintage post-war craftsmanship.

A highly collectible and unique artwork perfect for lovers of yokai, Japanese folk art, mythology figurines, or mid-century ceramics.
