Rare Meiji–Taisho Era Japanese Fusuma Door Panels – Hand-Painted Washi Landscape Art

A remarkable pair of antique Japanese architectural panels dating from the Meiji–Taisho period, approximately the early 1900s.

These beautiful panels feature authentic Japanese washi paper with hand-painted landscape scenes, depicting mature pine trees, distant mountains, vegetation, and water. The restrained composition and aged tones create the quiet, atmospheric quality characteristic of traditional Japanese interior art.

The panels retain their original-looking dark wooden framing, recessed square pulls, and aged surfaces. The natural wear and patina visible throughout the piece are part of its history and give it a wonderful wabi-sabi character.

These were originally made as part of a traditional Japanese interior, rather than as modern decorative wall art. Traditional Japanese fusuma are architectural sliding panels used to divide rooms, and historically they were frequently decorated with painted landscapes and other artistic subjects.

The Artwork

The painted composition has a distinctly traditional Japanese feeling, with pine trees, distant mountains, flowing water and natural vegetation arranged across the surface.

Traditional fusuma are opaque sliding panels used to divide rooms in Japanese architecture. Unlike shōji, which use translucent paper over a lattice, fusuma generally use opaque paper or fabric and were historically used as surfaces for paintings and decorative designs.

During the Meiji and Taishō periods, fusuma paper became available in larger formats, allowing larger decorative compositions to be created across the panels.
