Additional Information About This Item

The Shishi (Guardian Lion) is one of the most important protective symbols in Chinese art. Traditionally placed at temples, palaces, and wealthy homes, Shishi are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity and protection.

Bronze incense burners such as this were commonly used in Buddhist temples, ancestral shrines, scholar's studios, and refined homes for burning incense during meditation, ceremonies, and daily offerings.

The Republic Period (1912–1949) produced many finely crafted bronze ritual objects that combined traditional Chinese artistic styles with exceptional metalworking techniques inherited from earlier dynasties. Original signed examples with sculptural Shishi finials are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly those preserved in this condition.
