This is an authentic Japanese antique kōro (香炉) incense burner dating to the Meiji Era (1868–1912), hand-carved from solid hardwood and decorated with elegant gold maki-e lacquer scenery and mother-of-pearl inlay.
The rounded body stands on three carved feet and is topped with a pierced lid designed to release incense smoke in a gentle, ceremonial flow. The surface features a traditional Japanese landscape scene of pavilions, pine trees, mountains and flying birds — symbols of longevity, peace, and harmony.
This piece was sourced directly from a Japan Government Antique Auction, guaranteeing authenticity and historical value.
There is a minor age crack visible (please refer to photo #3). This is normal for a 100+ year-old wooden incense burner and does not affect its structural integrity or display beauty.

🪔 About Japanese Kōro
Kōro incense burners were essential objects in traditional Japanese homes and tea ceremonies. During the Meiji period, fine wooden kōro decorated with maki-e lacquer and shell inlay were crafted for the elite and often given as refined gifts.
This example combines wood carving, lacquer art, and mother-of-pearl work — a level of craftsmanship rarely found today.
