This impressive BIG SIZE pair of traditional Okinawan Shisa (Shishi) lion statues is authentically handcrafted in Japan from high-quality ceramic pottery and sourced directly from a Japanese Government Auction.

Shisa lions are deeply rooted in Okinawan and Ryukyuan culture, where they have been used for centuries as powerful protective guardians. Traditionally displayed in pairs, the open-mouth Shisa (A-gyō) is believed to ward off evil spirits, while the closed-mouth Shisa (Un-gyō) keeps good fortune safely inside — symbolizing harmony, balance, and protection.

Each statue displays expressive hand-sculpted features, bold posture, and natural age-acquired character. Minor surface wear such as light scratches or small imperfections are consistent with genuine vintage ceramic pottery and enhance the authenticity of the pieces.

These statues make a striking statement at an entrance, altar space, garden room, or interior display, offering both cultural meaning and visual impact.

🟢 About Okinawan Shisa
Shisa lions originate from Okinawa and the Ryukyu Kingdom and are closely related to Chinese guardian lions. Unlike mainland Japanese komainu, Shisa are often placed on rooftops or entrances to protect homes from misfortune, fire, and negative energy.

They remain one of Okinawa’s most iconic cultural symbols and are still handcrafted today using traditional ceramic methods.
