Japanese Wooden Koro Incense Burner Gold Maki-e Mother Pearl Inlay

This is an authentic Japanese antique kōro (香炉) incense burner dating to the Meiji Era (1868–1912)—a rare and elegant example of traditional craftsmanship.

Expertly hand-carved from solid hardwood, the rounded body is beautifully decorated with gold maki-e lacquer, depicting a serene Japanese landscape of pavilions, pine trees, mountains, and birds—symbolizing longevity, harmony, and peace.

The kōro stands on a classic three-leg base and is fitted with a pierced lid, allowing incense smoke to rise in a soft, ceremonial flow—perfect for creating a calm, meditative atmosphere in any space.

This piece was sourced directly from a Japan Government Antique Auction, ensuring its authenticity and historical value.

To preserve and present the piece properly, I have handcrafted a custom wooden box using period-appropriate wood. Please note that the original box did not survive—this box was made by me to honor the piece and improve its presentation.

This kōro is more than an object—it is a living piece of Japanese history, combining wood carving, lacquer artistry, and traditional symbolism into one refined work.
