Rare 1980s Japanese Shimadai Chawan (嶋台茶碗) — a collaborative tea bowl created by renowned Raku master Sasaki Shoraku and accompanied by a signed wooden box from Zen monk Kobayashi Taigen.

This exceptional piece is finished in radiant Akaraku (赤楽) style with a rich gold-glazed surface. Shimadai chawan are traditionally used in celebratory tea gatherings and symbolize good fortune, harmony, and auspicious beginnings. The gold tone references prosperity and formal tea occasions.

The tomobako (original wooden storage box) bears the calligraphic signature of Kobayashi Taigen, former head priest associated with Daitoku-ji lineage, adding strong cultural and historical significance. Original documents are included, further confirming authenticity.

The bowl displays a warm red clay body with natural glaze transitions and a refined, hand-formed foot. The interior shows a delicate pooling of glaze, characteristic of carefully controlled Raku firing techniques.

Sourced directly from a Japanese government antique auction, this is a certified collectible with both artistic and ceremonial value.

🍵 About Shimadai Chawan (嶋台茶碗)

Shimadai tea bowls are traditionally associated with formal tea ceremonies and auspicious celebrations. Their golden tones symbolize longevity, prosperity, and joyful occasions. They are often selected for New Year tea gatherings and milestone events.

Unlike everyday chawan, Shimadai examples are produced in limited numbers and frequently involve collaborations between ceramic artists and respected Zen calligraphers.
