Japanese Vintage 1970s Nambu Tekki Boat-Shaped Kōro Incense Burner – Signed, Original Cover

A wonderfully distinctive Japanese vintage Nambu Tekki incense burner (kōro) dating from the 1970s, featuring an unusual boat-shaped design and its original fitted cover.

The piece is made from cast iron in the tradition of Nambu Tekki (南部鉄器), one of Japan's best-known traditional ironworking crafts. The form is particularly charming, with the body representing a small boat and the heavily textured cover creating the appearance of a curved, organic roof or canopy.

The dark brown-black iron surface has developed an attractive aged appearance, with subtle variations in tone that give the piece considerable character.

The burner comes with its original cover and original fabric storage pouch, as shown in the photographs. The fitted cover features an opening underneath, allowing incense smoke to escape while giving the burner its distinctive sculptural appearance.

This is much more than a conventional incense holder. Its unusual nautical form makes it an interesting piece of Japanese decorative arts and a wonderful example of the creative forms found in postwar Japanese cast-iron craftsmanship.

About Nambu Tekki

Nambu Tekki (南部鉄器) is a traditional Japanese cast-iron craft associated particularly with Morioka and Ōshū in Iwate Prefecture. The craft has a history of around 400 years and developed alongside the Japanese tea ceremony. Traditional Nambu ironware is known for its durability, restrained aesthetic, carefully cast forms, and distinctive surface textures.

Nambu Tekki was officially designated a Japanese traditional craft in 1975.

Although Nambu Tekki is particularly famous for iron kettles and tea utensils, the craft has also been used for decorative and household objects. This incense burner is an especially unusual example because of its boat-inspired sculptural form.

🪷 Use & Display

The burner can be used for traditional Japanese incense or simply displayed as a collectible object.

For burning incense, use an appropriate heat-resistant incense ash or material inside the burner and always place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

Its compact sculptural design also makes it suitable for:

Japanese tea rooms
Meditation spaces
Wabi-Sabi interiors
Traditional Japanese collections
Buddhist-inspired interiors
Study or library décor
Japanese antique displays
