Japanese Katagami Kakejiku (型紙掛軸) ✨ – 1980s (昭和時代 Showa Era) ✨

This is a stunning Japanese hanging scroll (掛け軸 / Kakejiku) from the 1980s, sourced directly from a Japan government auction. Measuring an impressive 126 cm (49.6 inches) long, this scroll features a serene scene of two cranes beneath a pine tree with the rising sun, painted with exquisite detail.

🎨 Artistic Technique – Sumi-e (墨絵)
The artwork incorporates elements of Sumi-e (墨絵), a traditional Japanese ink painting style that emphasizes simplicity, subtle gradations, and expressive brushwork. While primarily known as a monochrome technique (墨 = ink, 絵 = painting), this scroll combines ink work with soft, delicate colors, creating a refined and timeless beauty.

This is an authentic Japanese hanging scroll (掛軸 / Kakejiku) featuring a traditional Katagami stencil (型紙), mounted for appreciation as decorative art.
Katagami (型紙): A hand-cut stencil used in katazome (型染め) textile dyeing. Crafted from strong washi paper (和紙) treated with persimmon tannin (柿渋) for durability, katagami were once essential tools for kimono and fabric decoration.
Kakejiku (掛軸): The scroll format, allowing seasonal rotation and appreciation of art in traditional Japanese interiors.

This piece showcases the intricate craftsmanship of Japanese stencil cutting, where designs were meticulously carved by hand with fine blades. Such stencils were highly prized, and later appreciated as standalone artworks, mounted in scrolls for preservation and display.

🕊️ Symbolism
Cranes (鶴 Tsuru): Longevity, fidelity, and happiness
