Japanese Vintage HANAYAMA Quintet Plus 1 – 6-in-1 Magnetic Board Game – c.1989

A fascinating and increasingly collectible piece of Japanese retro gaming history — an authentic HANAYAMA “Quintet Plus 1” magnetic 6-in-1 family board game, dating to approximately the late 1980s.

The Japanese title on the original packaging reads ゲーム マグネット付 クインテット プラス1, meaning “Game – Magnetic – Quintet Plus 1.” The original box promotes it as a family game offering six different games in one compact magnetic game system.

This particular example is especially attractive to collectors because it retains its original Japanese packaging, game board and game components, giving it the look and character of a genuine period Japanese toy rather than a modern reproduction.

The set combines traditional Japanese games with classic international board games, all designed around the same magnetic playing surface.

Six Games in One Set

The HANAYAMA Quintet Plus 1 includes:

Reversi – the classic black-and-white strategy game
Nip – a traditional Japanese strategy game associated with HANAYAMA
Solitaire – a classic single-player peg-style game
Seega – a traditional strategy game
Shogi – traditional Japanese chess
Diamond Game – a colorful peg-and-position strategy game

Japanese product references confirm these six games and describe the set as a magnetic family game designed for 2–4 players. The magnetic system also makes the set practical for playing where movement might otherwise disturb the pieces.

A Wonderful Example of Japanese Retro Game Design

What makes this set particularly interesting is the combination of traditional Japanese games, Western-style strategy games, and magnetic game-board technology in one product.

The colorful original packaging shows the different game configurations and demonstrates how the same central game board could be transformed for each game.

The Japanese instructions and original presentation are also an important part of its vintage character.

The model is documented in Japanese collector/reference material as dating to around 1989, making the late-1980s attribution more precise than simply calling it an “1980s” game.

Condition

Vintage / Excellent Collector Condition – Appears Unused

This set has been preserved with its original Japanese packaging and presents exceptionally well for its age.

The playing board and components appear clean and well preserved in the supplied photographs, with no obvious signs of actual gameplay or heavy use.

The original box and printed materials naturally show age-related discoloration, light surface marks, minor scuffs and signs of storage, consistent with a Japanese vintage item from the late 1980s.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as the photographs are an important part of the condition description.

Please note: Although the set appears unused, because this is a vintage item several decades old, I recommend considering it “apparently unused” rather than guaranteeing that it has never been played.

Collector's Note

This is not a modern reproduction or contemporary board game. It is a genuine Japanese vintage HANAYAMA multi-game set, retaining the original Japanese graphic design and period presentation.

The HANAYAMA company has a long history in Japanese games and puzzles, and the Nip game in particular has an interesting connection to the company's earlier game history. Japanese reference material notes that HANAYAMA's Nip was originally developed in Japan and later appeared in multi-game products such as the Quintet series.

For collectors of Japanese retro toys, vintage board games, traditional Japanese games, HANAYAMA games, 1980s Japanese design, or unusual Japanese ephemera, this is a wonderful and unusual piece.
