Japanese Taisho X-Ray Lamp Restored Antique Matsushita Electric
Japanese Taisho X-Ray Lamp Restored Antique Matsushita Electric
Authentic Japanese Antique Taisho–Early Showa Medical X-Ray Lamp | Working Industrial Spotlight | Matsushita Electric | Original Adjustable Stand | Japanese Antique Auction
Own an extraordinary piece of Japanese medical and industrial history with this extremely rare Taisho–Early Showa era medical X-ray light assembly, originally used as part of Japan's pioneering radiological equipment during the early 20th century.
Sourced from an Official Japanese Antique Auction, this fascinating artifact represents the dawn of Japanese electrical medical engineering. During the Taisho (1912–1926) and early Showa periods, manufacturers such as Matsushita Electric (now Panasonic) produced some of Japan's earliest electrical medical devices, including diagnostic lighting and X-ray equipment.
Its impressive industrial appearance features a heavy cast-metal cylindrical housing mounted on an adjustable mechanical support. Below the main housing is a leather bellows focusing mechanism, allowing the angle and projection distance to be adjusted—an engineering solution commonly found on early medical imaging and examination equipment.
The sturdy wooden adjustment frame includes a mechanical hand wheel used to raise, lower, and securely position the lamp during operation.
Unlike many surviving examples that remain incomplete or non-functional, this unit has been professionally fitted with a new electrical cord. The original wiring had deteriorated and was incompatible with modern electrical standards, so it has been safely replaced. The lamp is now fully functional and works beautifully as a dramatic industrial spotlight, display lamp, museum-style conversation piece, or interior décor item.
As a special bonus, the display stand shown in the photographs will be included as a complimentary gift with the purchase.

Historical Background
During the early decades of the 20th century, Japan rapidly embraced modern electrical engineering and medical technology. Hospitals and universities began using imported and domestically produced X-ray equipment for diagnosis and research.
Early radiological devices combined precision mechanical adjustments with heavy metal shielding and adjustable focusing mechanisms. Today, surviving examples are exceptionally scarce because most were retired, dismantled, or discarded as medical technology rapidly evolved.
This piece survives as an outstanding example of early Japanese industrial craftsmanship and medical innovation.
Condition
Very good antique condition considering its age.
The metal housing, wooden frame, bellows mechanism, and mechanical adjustment system all display honest age-related wear, surface patina, and signs of decades of use that contribute to the authenticity and historical character of the piece.
The original electrical cord has been replaced because the original wiring had become damaged and was incompatible with modern electrical systems. The replacement allows the lamp to operate safely using contemporary power connections.
The lamp is fully functional and is best suited today as decorative industrial lighting or a display piece. It is not intended for medical use.
