Extremely Rare Japanese Vintage 1950s Giant Shishi Mai (獅子舞) Wooden Festival Mask

Own an extraordinary piece of Japan's living cultural heritage with this authentic giant Shishi Mai (獅子舞) festival lion head, handcrafted during the 1950s and acquired from an official Japanese antique auction.

Unlike modern reproductions, this is a genuine ceremonial lion head that was used in traditional Japanese festival performances, particularly during Shōgatsu (Japanese New Year) celebrations and other local festivals. Hand-carved from solid wood and finished in rich red lacquer with bold black accents, it embodies the remarkable craftsmanship of mid-century Japanese folk artisans.

The fierce expression, oversized mouth, expressive eyebrows, and beautifully painted gold-colored eyes and teeth give this magnificent lion head an impressive presence. The articulated tongue remains inside the mouth, while the original festival cloth cover accompanies the piece, preserving its authenticity and history.

To ensure durability while respecting its original appearance, the tongue suspension cord has been carefully replaced with copper wire. This sympathetic restoration provides additional strength without detracting from the mask's traditional character.

Large ceremonial Shishi heads of this quality and size are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially examples that retain their original festival wear and accessories.

Cultural Significance

The Shishi Mai (Lion Dance) is one of Japan's oldest and most beloved traditional performances. Dating back centuries, the lion is believed to drive away evil spirits, bring prosperity, and bless homes, businesses, and communities with good fortune.

During Japanese New Year (Shōgatsu) and regional festivals, performers wear these magnificent lion heads while dancing to traditional music, symbolically purifying the surroundings and bringing good luck to spectators.

Because of their ceremonial use, authentic vintage Shishi Mai heads possess a character and spirit that reproductions simply cannot replicate.
