Japanese Miya Daiku Giant Hand Forged Chisel Signed Carpenter Tool Rare
Extremely Rare Japanese Antique 1950s Miya Daiku Giant Woodworking Chisel – Signed – Hand-Forged Steel – Original Bamboo Handle – Includes Wooden Storage Box
This is an extremely rare authentic Japanese 1950s Miya Daiku (Temple Carpenter) giant woodworking chisel (Nomi), expertly hand-forged by a skilled Japanese blacksmith and signed on the blade.
Unlike ordinary carpenter's chisels, this impressive oversized tool was designed for Miya Daiku, the highly respected craftsmen responsible for constructing and restoring Japan's temples, shrines, pagodas, and traditional wooden architecture. Their tools were forged to the highest standards, allowing them to create the intricate timber joinery for which Japanese architecture is renowned.
The blade is made from traditional hand-forged laminated steel, providing exceptional durability and edge retention. It retains the maker's signature, while the beautifully aged bamboo handle features decorative hand-carved grip details that enhance both comfort and appearance.
Included is a wooden storage box for protection and display. Please note that the box is not original to the chisel, but it complements the piece well and provides safe storage.
Measuring approximately 55 cm (21.7 inches) in overall length, this impressive tool makes an outstanding addition to collections of Japanese woodworking tools, blacksmithing, folk art, or traditional architecture.
Authentic signed Miya Daiku chisels of this size and quality have become increasingly difficult to find, making this an exceptional collector's opportunity.

Additional Information
Miya Daiku (宮大工) are Japan's elite temple carpenters, responsible for constructing and preserving some of the country's most treasured shrines, Buddhist temples, and historic wooden buildings. Their specialized tools were individually forged by master blacksmiths using traditional methods closely related to Japanese sword-making.
The blade combines a hard high-carbon steel cutting edge with a softer iron backing, producing exceptional strength, edge retention, and resistance to breakage.
Oversized signed chisels like this were used when shaping massive structural timbers and creating traditional Japanese joinery without nails. Because these tools were heavily used throughout their working lives, surviving signed examples with their original handle are becoming increasingly scarce.
This remarkable piece represents both Japanese craftsmanship and architectural history.
