A rare and elegant set of Japanese Kutani ware ceramic kakejiku scroll weights, dating to the 1970s Showa era, beautifully preserved in unused condition with the original wooden box (tomobako).

These weights were traditionally used to gently hold the lower edge of hanging scrolls (kakejiku) flat, preventing movement while protecting the artwork from damage. The balanced design and attached silk cords allow for secure yet delicate placement, reflecting the refined practicality of Japanese display culture.

Each ceramic weight is hand-painted in classic Kutani style, featuring intricate floral motifs and rich enamel colors with fine detailing. The craftsmanship shows the elegance and precision for which Kutani ware is celebrated. The presence of the original signed wooden box further confirms authenticity and careful preservation.

Sourced directly from a Japanese Government Antique Auction, this set offers reliable provenance and is ideal for collectors, calligraphy practitioners, tea ceremony settings, or refined Japanese interiors.

About Kakejiku Weights
Kakejiku weights (also called fūchin) have long been used in Japanese homes, tea rooms, and temples to stabilize hanging scrolls. Beyond function, they are considered decorative art objects, often crafted in ceramic, metal, or glass to complement the scroll and surrounding space.

Kutani ware examples are especially prized for their vibrant hand-painted designs and historical ceramic tradition rooted in Ishikawa Prefecture.
