This is an authentic Japanese brass railway commemorative plaque, issued for the historic farewell event of steam locomotives on the Shinonoi Line, held on February 22, 1970.

The plaque honors D51 549, part of the legendary D51 class (“Degoichi”), the most widely produced steam locomotives in Japanese railway history. These locomotives played a vital role in Japan’s industrial and transportation development during the 20th century.

Crafted from solid brass, the front displays the locomotive number “D51 549” in bold raised lettering, while the reverse is finely engraved with historical details, including:

  • Manufacturing date: October 29, 1940 (Showa 15)
  • Built at: JNR Nagano Factory
  • Commemorative date: February 22, 1970
  • Issued by: Railway Friends Society (鉄道友の会)

This plaque was distributed as a souvenir for attendees of the final steam run, marking the transition from steam to electrification—a pivotal moment in Japanese railway history.

D51 549 itself was later retired in 1973 and is now preserved in Nagano City, making this plaque not only a collectible but a direct connection to a preserved historical locomotive.

A must-have for railway collectors, train enthusiasts, or Japanese industrial history lovers, this piece carries both historical depth and display appeal.
