What is a Zakuri?

Zakuri (座繰り) refers to a traditional Japanese hand-operated method and apparatus for reeling silk thread from cocoons.

Before modern mechanized silk-reeling equipment became widespread, Japanese silk producers used wooden hand-operated machinery to carefully unwind silk fibers from silkworm cocoons. The operator would turn the mechanism manually while the gears transferred the movement through the machine.

The large wooden gears seen on this example are therefore functional mechanical components rather than decorative elements.

The development of silk production was particularly important during the Meiji period, when Japan's silk industry became one of the country's major industries.

Its Second Life as a Bonsai Display
