Extremely Rare Japanese Antique Miya Daiku Giant Woodworking Chisel – Signed – Hand-Forged Steel – Traditional Temple Carpenter's Tool – Includes Wooden Storage Box

This is an extremely rare authentic Japanese Miya Daiku (Temple Carpenter) giant woodworking chisel (Nomi), handcrafted using traditional Japanese forging techniques and signed by the original blacksmith.

Designed for professional Miya Daiku, Japan's master temple carpenters, this impressive oversized chisel was used for shaping heavy structural timbers employed in the construction and restoration of shrines, temples, pagodas, and historic wooden buildings.

The blade is expertly hand-forged from laminated steel, providing exceptional durability, edge retention, and strength. The original maker's signature remains visible on the blade, adding authenticity and collector value.

The tool retains its original hardwood handle, beautifully aged through decades of careful use while remaining solid and comfortable in the hand. Included is a wooden storage box for protection and display. Please note that the box is not original to the chisel but is an excellent companion for safe storage.

Measuring approximately 57 cm (22.4 inches) in overall length, this impressive tool is suitable for collectors, museums, Japanese woodworking enthusiasts, or as an outstanding decorative display piece.

Additional Information

Miya Daiku (宮大工) are Japan's elite master carpenters, renowned for constructing and preserving temples, shrines, castles, and other historic wooden structures without the use of modern fasteners. Their specialized tools were individually forged by master blacksmiths using techniques derived from traditional Japanese sword making.

Large chisels such as this were used to shape massive wooden beams and execute the precise mortise-and-tenon joinery that has defined Japanese architecture for centuries.

Because these tools were working instruments rather than decorative objects, surviving signed examples with their original handles are becoming increasingly rare. This piece is both a practical example of traditional craftsmanship and an important artifact of Japan's woodworking heritage.
