Japanese Antique 1950s Miya Daiku Giant Hand Forged Woodworking Chisel

🟢 Sourced from Official Japanese Antique Auction

This is an exceptionally rare authentic Japanese antique Miya Daiku (Temple Carpenter) giant woodworking chisel, dating to the 1950s. Hand-forged using traditional Japanese blacksmithing methods, this impressive professional carpenter's tool was created for demanding timber framing and shrine or temple construction.

The blade bears the original blacksmith's signature, a mark of authenticity and craftsmanship. Large chisels of this size were used by skilled Miya Daiku, Japan's elite temple and shrine carpenters who passed their techniques through generations.

The blade remains in remarkable condition with an attractive aged patina, while the hardwood handle has naturally aged over decades of use. The edge remains well preserved, making this an outstanding collector's example or display piece for woodworking enthusiasts.

A wooden storage box is included for protection and display. Please note that the box is not original to the tool but fits it well.

Whether displayed in a workshop, Japanese interior, museum collection, or traditional tool collection, this chisel represents the extraordinary quality of Japanese hand-forged craftsmanship.

Additional Information

Japanese Miya Daiku are among the world's most respected traditional carpenters. They specialize in constructing temples, shrines, pagodas, and historic wooden architecture using centuries-old woodworking techniques that require extraordinary precision.

Large hand-forged chisels like this were essential for shaping massive structural beams and complex wooden joinery without nails. Because these professional tools were heavily used, surviving signed examples in this condition have become increasingly difficult to find.

Today they are highly sought after by collectors of Japanese tools, blacksmithing, woodworking history, and traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
