A remarkable piece of traditional Japanese woodworking history, this is an authentic vintage Japanese carpenter's chisel dating to the 1970s, made in Japan and associated with the specialized tools used in traditional Japanese carpentry.

This is an unusually large and distinctive 90-degree angle chisel, with a specially shaped steel blade that allows the cutting edge to reach areas where a conventional straight chisel would be difficult to use.

The unusual offset form gives this tool a strong presence and reflects the highly specialized nature of traditional Japanese woodworking tools. Japanese chisels are known as 鑿 (nomi) and are fundamental hand tools used for cutting, shaping, mortising, joinery, and finishing wood. Good vintage condition with visible signs of age and previous use.

The steel blade and metal surfaces show natural oxidation, patina, scratches, marks, and general wear consistent with decades of use and storage. The wooden handle also shows age-related wear and character.
