Hariko no Tora Special Edition Shusse-Tora Tiger Vintage Japan Folk Art
Hariko no Tora Special Edition Shusse-Tora Tiger Vintage Japan Folk Art
This is an authentic 1968 Japanese Hariko no Tora (papier-mâché tiger) — a traditional folk art talisman symbolizing strength, courage, success, and protection. This particular piece is a 特撰 出世虎 (Tokusen Shusse-Tora), meaning “Special Selection Successful/Prominent Tiger,” and comes signed with its original cardboard box and documents, all sourced directly from a Japan government auction.
Hariko no Tora figures are crafted using classic hariko papier-mâché techniques, hand-painted in bold yellow and black stripes, and often feature a gently bobbing head. These tigers were—and still are—displayed to celebrate Tango no Sekku (Children’s Day) as symbols of healthy growth, bravery, and protection from misfortune.
This rare 1968 example stands out for its old-Showa charm, original packaging, and excellent craftsmanship. It makes a perfect addition for collectors of Japanese folk art, spiritual décor, or anyone seeking a meaningful cultural display piece.
Condition: Vintage. Expected age wear, small marks, and minor imperfections consistent with 1960s papier-mâché art. Please check photos for full details.
