Extremely Rare 1800s Japanese Sakura Wood Tray Edo Meiji Urushi Signed
✨ Extremely Rare 1800s Japanese Sakura Wood Tray ✨
An exceptional and museum-worthy example of authentic Japanese craftsmanship from the Edo–Meiji period, this rare sakura wood tray dates back to the 1800s and was sourced directly from a Japanese Government Antique Auction.
Crafted from beautiful Japanese cherry wood (sakura), the tray features a deep black-red urushi lacquer finish that reflects the elegance and refined aesthetic of traditional Japanese decorative arts. The warm glow and natural grain beneath the lacquer create a timeless visual presence impossible to replicate in modern reproductions.
The tray is artist signed on the front, increasing both its historical significance and collectible value. Included with the piece is its original washi paper wrapping, preserved in aged condition — an incredibly rare survival for an antique of this era.
A poetic Edo-period inscription appears on the surface:
「三四而一個何その原」
A loose interpretation reads:
“Three or four, yet one — what is its origin?”
This type of philosophical wording was common in Edo-period artistic culture, often intended as a meditative riddle or poetic reflection. It adds an additional layer of mystery, intellect, and cultural depth to the piece.
Despite being over a century old, the tray remains in very good antique condition. Minor scratches, lacquer wear, and slight peeling around the corners are present and consistent with authentic age and careful historical use.
This is not simply a tray — it is a preserved fragment of Japanese cultural history and an extraordinary collector’s item suitable for display, study, tea room décor, or fine Japanese interior styling.
