Own a beautiful example of traditional Chinese craftsmanship with this authentic 1970s Chinese Wooden Head Rest Pillow, acquired directly from a Japan Government Antique Auction.

Handcrafted from solid wood, this distinctive headrest features an elegant curved sleeping surface finished in a rich red lacquer. The top is beautifully decorated with a traditional Dragon and Phoenix motif, while floral designs adorn the sides, creating a striking piece of functional folk art.

Before the widespread use of soft pillows, wooden headrests were commonly used throughout China to support the neck while sleeping. They helped preserve elaborate hairstyles, improved airflow during warm weather, and were believed to promote proper posture during rest. Today they are highly prized as decorative antiques and cultural collectibles.

The Dragon and Phoenix design carries deep symbolic meaning in Chinese tradition. The dragon represents strength, prosperity, and protection, while the phoenix symbolizes harmony, beauty, happiness, and renewal. Together they are regarded as one of the most auspicious symbols of good fortune and balance.

Whether displayed in a collection, used as a conversation piece, or incorporated into Asian-inspired décor, this wooden headrest represents both traditional craftsmanship and cultural history.

Purchased directly from a Japan Government Antique Auction, this is a genuine vintage piece and not a modern reproduction.

About Chinese Wooden Headrests

Wooden headrests have been used in China for centuries and were especially popular during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Designed to support the neck rather than the head, they helped preserve elaborate hairstyles while allowing better air circulation during sleep. Wealthier examples were often decorated with lacquer, carved motifs, or symbolic artwork representing prosperity, longevity, and happiness.

Dragon & Phoenix Symbolism

The Dragon and Phoenix are among the most important symbols in Chinese culture. Together they represent harmony, prosperity, marital happiness, balance, and good fortune, making them a timeless decorative motif found on furniture, ceremonial objects, and traditional household items.
