Kimekomi dolls originated in Kyoto during the Edo Period over 270 years ago. Their name comes from the Japanese word "kimekomu", meaning "to tuck into grooves." Artisans carve a wooden body with fine channels before carefully pressing silk fabric into each groove, creating beautifully layered clothing without sewing.
