🦁 Authentic 1950s Japanese Bronze Incense Burner – Shishi Guardian Design

A striking vintage Japanese kōro (香炉), or incense burner, dating to approximately the 1950s Showa era.

This beautifully sculptural piece features a small Shishi (獅子) guardian figure positioned on top of the pierced lid. The Shishi, often referred to as a Japanese guardian lion, is traditionally associated with protection, strength, and the warding off of evil and has long been an important motif in Japanese Buddhist and decorative arts.

The burner has an impressive three-legged form with rounded side handles and a domed, pierced cover designed to allow incense smoke to escape. The body is decorated with raised ornamental motifs, including botanical and possibly floral elements, creating wonderful depth across the aged metal surface.

The surface has developed a naturally darkened vintage patina over the decades, with areas of lighter metal and remnants of warm/gold-toned decoration visible within the raised designs. These variations give the piece considerable character and emphasize its age.
