Bring a true masterpiece of early 20th century Japanese craftsmanship into your collection.

This exceptional Antique Wajima-nuri lacquer bowl dates to the early 1900s (Meiji–Taisho period) and showcases refined gold maki-e artistry featuring blooming peonies and graceful butterflies over a deep black lacquer ground.

Wajima lacquerware, produced in Ishikawa Prefecture, is considered the highest standard of Japanese lacquer art. It is distinguished by its labor-intensive multi-layer construction and the famous jinoko undercoating technique, which gives the piece remarkable strength and longevity.

This bowl is particularly rare due to its impressive size (approx. 30 cm) and substantial weight (1.5 kg), making it a statement display piece suitable for refined interiors, tea ceremony settings, or serious collectors of Japanese decorative arts.

It comes with its original artist-signed tomobako (paulownia wooden box), which serves as provenance and significantly enhances collectibility.

Sourced from a Japan government auction.
