This is an exceptionally rare antique Japanese Komainu (狛犬) / Shisa guardian statue dating to the late Edo–early Meiji period (1800s).

Sourced directly from a Japan government auction, this piece was crafted in the historic Mino ware tradition (modern-day Gifu Prefecture), an area renowned for its high-quality ceramics.

Unlike glazed pottery, this example is made from unglazed earthenware, allowing natural kiln firing to produce subtle variations in tone, texture, and surface character. The result is a beautifully aged piece with a rich natural patina, reflecting its long history and authentic presence.

Komainu—known as Shisa in Okinawa—are traditional lion-dog guardians placed at entrances of shrines, temples, and homes to ward off evil spirits and protect the space.
