Antique Japanese Komainu Shisa 1800s Edo Meiji Mino Ware Guardian Statue
Antique Japanese Komainu Shisa 1800s Edo Meiji Mino Ware Guardian Statue
This is an exceptionally rare antique Japanese Komainu (狛犬) / Shisa guardian statue dating to the late Edo–early Meiji period (1800s).
Sourced directly from a Japan government auction, this piece was crafted in the historic Mino ware tradition (modern-day Gifu Prefecture), an area renowned for its high-quality ceramics.
Unlike glazed pottery, this example is made from unglazed earthenware, allowing natural kiln firing to produce subtle variations in tone, texture, and surface character. The result is a beautifully aged piece with a rich natural patina, reflecting its long history and authentic presence.
Komainu—known as Shisa in Okinawa—are traditional lion-dog guardians placed at entrances of shrines, temples, and homes to ward off evil spirits and protect the space. This figure features a strong, grounded stance, expressive facial features, and detailed curled mane, embodying both protection and artistic craftsmanship.
A true one-of-a-kind collector’s piece, ideal for Japanese antique collectors, wabi-sabi interiors, or spiritual display.
