Antique Japanese Copper Kogai Hairpin Edo-Meiji Era Samurai Ornament
Antique Japanese Copper Kogai Hairpin Edo-Meiji Era Samurai Ornament
An authentic Japanese kogai (笄) dating from the late Edo period (1603–1868) to early Meiji era. Traditionally associated with samurai culture, the kogai functioned as a refined hair-arranging pin tool and was sometimes housed within a dedicated slot in the sword scabbard (saya).
This example features a finely engraved decorative motif with beautiful natural patina developed over more than a century. The surface wear and aging are consistent with genuine antique metalwork of the Edo–Meiji transition period.
The kogai is crafted from copper or mixed metal and shows careful hand-engraving typical of traditional Japanese sword fittings (tosogu).
Included is a custom handmade wooden display stand, crafted from reclaimed 19th-century wood. The stand is modern handmade and designed specifically to display this antique piece. It is not original to the kogai.
Sourced from an official Japanese Government Auction, this is a genuine antique cultural artifact — not a reproduction.

📜 Historical Context
The kogai was an elegant personal accessory used in traditional Japanese dress. In samurai sword mountings, it was inserted into a slot in the scabbard alongside the kozuka. Beyond its practical use, it reflected refinement, craftsmanship, and cultural identity.
Unsigned examples were common, especially workshop-produced pieces, and remain highly collectible today for their artistic and historical value.
Today, this piece is offered strictly as a historical display artifact.
