Historical Information
Fangzu Bu (Square-Foot Spade Money)

One of the earliest forms of standardized currency used during China's Warring States Period (approximately 475–221 BCE). These bronze spade-shaped coins evolved from agricultural tools and were circulated throughout several ancient Chinese states before the unification of China.

Da Bu Huang Qian

Issued during the short-lived Xin Dynasty under Emperor Wang Mang (approximately 10 CE), this coin is famous for its elegant seal-script inscription and ambitious monetary reforms. Today it remains one of the most recognizable coins of ancient Chinese numismatics.

Historical Significance

Prior to Japan's Edo period, millions of Chinese bronze coins circulated throughout Japan and became the foundation of early Japanese commerce. Collections like this beautifully illustrate the historical relationship between Chinese and Japanese monetary systems.

Condition

Very good antique condition considering the extraordinary age.

Both bronze artifacts display natural oxidation, verdigris, mineral deposits, and age-related wear consistent with authentic ancient archaeological objects. The collector's display card shows expected aging, discoloration, and storage wear.

Additional Information

Ancient Chinese bronze coins are among the earliest standardized currencies in world history. The spade money (布幣) represents one of the oldest known forms of metal currency, predating the familiar round coin by several centuries.

The Da Bu Huang Qian coin reflects one of history's most ambitious monetary reforms under Emperor Wang Mang and is celebrated for its distinctive seal-script calligraphy.

Because authentic ancient examples have survived for over two millennia, each piece develops a unique natural patina that cannot be replicated. This historical display makes an outstanding addition to collections of Asian antiques, ancient coins, archaeology, museums, or educational institutions.
