⚔️ Authentic Japanese Early 19th Century Lacquered Jingasa Helmet – Samurai Era – 三つ葉葵 Mon ⚔️
A rare and original antique: This stunning lacquered wooden Jingasa (陣笠) dates back to the 1850s, a time marking the final years of the Samurai era in Japan. These lightweight helmets, worn by foot soldiers (ashigaru) under the rule of Japanese warlords, were more than ceremonial—they were functional battle gear, offering real protection in warfare, especially against sword strikes from mounted enemies.
This Jingasa bears the gold-painted Mitsuba-aoi (三つ葉葵) crest, also known as the Triple Hollyhock, representing the Matsudaira and Tokugawa clans—the latter being the final Shogunate rulers of Japan (1603–1867).
While this item dates to the Edo Period (江戸時代) and pre-Boshin War (戊辰戦争, 1868–1869), the interior padded liner with hemp and cloth supports may be a post-WWII restoration—common among museum-quality preserved pieces.
The lacquered shell remains in exceptional condition, with its striking black exterior and deep red interior perfectly preserved. A true museum-quality artifact—ready to be displayed, studied, or treasured by collectors of Japanese military or Samurai history.
