Rare 1800s Japanese Shrine Mirror (Kagami) – Sumiyoshi Shrine Dedication – Original Wooden Box

An extraordinary and historically significant Japanese antique, this authentic 19th-century shrine mirror (Kagami / 鏡) dates to the 1800s and remains preserved with its original wooden storage box.

Acquired directly from a Japanese Government Antique Auction, this remarkable piece is more than a mirror—it is a spiritual artifact connected to Japan's rich Shinto tradition.

The reverse side of the mirror is beautifully decorated with traditional Japanese motifs, including graceful cranes in flight above flowing ocean waves. In Japanese culture, cranes symbolize longevity, good fortune, and purity, while waves represent strength, continuity, and the enduring flow of life.

Most notably, the mirror bears the rare inscriptions:

奉納 (Hōnō)
Translation: "Dedication" or "Sacred Offering"
and
住吉神社 (Sumiyoshi Jinja)
Translation: "Sumiyoshi Shrine"

These inscriptions indicate that the mirror was dedicated as a sacred offering to Sumiyoshi Shrine, one of Japan's most important and historically revered Shinto shrines. Such mirrors were often donated by patrons, merchants, craftsmen, or community members as acts of devotion and gratitude.

Because shrine-dedicated mirrors were ceremonial objects rather than ordinary household items, surviving examples with clear inscriptions and original storage boxes are exceptionally rare today.

This outstanding artifact represents an important piece of Japanese religious history and would make a centerpiece for any serious collection of Shinto, Edo-period, Meiji-era, or Japanese cultural antiques.
