1800s Japanese Sakura Wood Tray Edo Meiji Urushi Lacquer Signed Antique
1800s Japanese Sakura Wood Tray Edo Meiji Urushi Lacquer Signed Antique
This authentic Japanese antique tray dates from the late Edo to early Meiji period (1800s) and is crafted from beautiful sakura (cherry) wood with a rich black-red urushi lacquer finish.
A remarkable example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, this tray reflects the refined aesthetics and philosophy of historical Japanese decorative arts. The deep lacquer surface displays a warm aged glow developed naturally over more than a century, giving the piece exceptional character and authenticity.
The tray features an original signed inscription on the front, enhancing both its historical importance and collectible value. Included with the tray is its original washi paper wrapping, an extremely rare surviving accessory for a piece of this age. Although the paper shows heavy wear and age-related deterioration, it adds further provenance and historical depth.
The inscription reads:
「三四而一個何その原」
A literal interpretation is:
“Three or four, yet one — what is its origin?”
This poetic phrase resembles philosophical riddles and reflective expressions commonly associated with Edo-period artistic culture, adding intellectual and spiritual significance to the piece.
The tray remains in very good antique condition considering its age, with natural scratches, lacquer wear, and minor corner peeling consistent with over 100 years of careful use and preservation.
Sourced directly from a Japanese Government Antique Auction, this is a museum-quality collectible suitable for advanced collectors of Japanese antiques, urushi lacquerware, tea ceremony objects, or Edo-period decorative arts.
